Coat type describes the coat. It does not, on its own, verify temperament, working ability, pedigree or breeding suitability.
The terminology
The FCI standard describes double coat and long double coat, both with undercoat. English-language event records and breeders may use “stock coat,” “stock hair,” “long stock coat” or the German terms Stockhaar and Langstockhaar. When matching a profile, preserve the source’s meaning and note its terminology.
A photograph is useful for recognition, but a record should not acquire a definitive coat classification solely because an image looks fluffy. Age, presentation and camera angle can make informal identification unreliable.
The show system changes the question
The AKC standard describes a medium-length double coat and lists an overly long outer coat among coat faults. The FCI’s two coat varieties and the AKC wording are therefore not interchangeable descriptions of show eligibility and judging.
Before entering an event, read its premium or schedule and the current rules of the organizing body. Ask the secretary which class applies to your dog. A social-media comment about “allowed coats” is not a substitute for that answer.
What to ask an owner
If you are considering a dog, discuss actual coat care with someone who maintains that dog or its adult relatives. Ask to see the coat in ordinary condition as well as show presentation. The useful answer describes practical routines, not just a fashionable label.
Keep health and breeding questions separate. Ask for the relevant records regardless of coat, and have a veterinarian interpret medical findings. Do not treat a preferred look as evidence of a preferred health outcome.
- Which coat description is recorded by the registry or event?
- What grooming does this individual require?
- Are the photos current and correctly identified?
- Are comparisons drawn from the same event and coat class?
Compare within a clearly named class
On GSD Index, a placement belongs to its published class. A long-coat male’s place in one show cannot be directly exchanged for a stock-coat female’s place in another. You can explore both, but the result needs its original context.
Use the coat filter to narrow a search, then reopen the rest of the record. Coat is one field in a larger profile, not the verdict.
