IGP scoring: three phases, one result.

Understand tracking, obedience and protection scores with an interactive IGP score explorer and a clear distinction between totals and titles.

THE SHORT ANSWER

IGP combines A: tracking, B: obedience and C: protection. Read the phase scores and official outcome together; a total alone is not the whole result.

INTERACTIVE EXPLAINER

Fictional practice values · not a real dog or title decision.

EXAMPLE TOTAL270/ 300

Each phase meets the 70-point minimum in this example.

Arithmetic only. Eligibility, official judging, disqualification and the complete rules still apply.

How to read A / B / C

The referenced USCA 2025 rulebook uses three phases of up to 100 points each, for a maximum total of 300. Its IGP 1–3 framework requires at least 70 in each phase. Eligibility, disqualification and other rules still apply; this page’s arithmetic does not award a title.

Use the interactive explorer to see why a high total can conceal a weak phase. It uses invented practice values, never scores assigned to a real dog. Moving a slider changes the example only.

Two identical totals can tell different stories

Consider two fictional score lines: 96 / 82 / 92 and 90 / 90 / 90. Both add to 270. The first distributes those points unevenly; the second is balanced across the three numbers. Neither line, on its own, explains the exercises, conditions or judge’s complete assessment.

A sensible comparison keeps event, level and rule edition alongside the numbers. Avoid turning one result into a permanent personality label or a prediction of what a dog will produce.

What our ranking displays mean

For supported working-sport records, GSD Index displays the published event result and documented phase breakdown. We do not calculate a universal breed-quality score by blending unrelated events.

If the source supplies an official placement, that placement takes priority over a homemade re-sort. Equal totals can involve event-specific tie rules. Missing or incomplete scores should remain marked rather than receiving a guessed zero or average.

Use the result as a route to better questions

Ask for the original scorebook or official result link when a title influences your decision. Confirm which level was completed, when it happened and whether the dog shown in the profile is the same individual.

If you want to participate, speak with a suitable club and read the current rulebook. This score guide is for understanding results, not a substitute for supervised training or an entry decision.

  • Read the official outcome, not only the sum.
  • Compare within a named event and level.
  • Keep disqualification or non-completion visible.
  • Use the organizer’s current rules before entering.
