Choose the breeder conversation before the puppy photo.

A German Shepherd puppy-buyer checklist focused on household fit, parent records, breeder communication and preparation.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with the home you can provide and the evidence behind the litter. A puppy’s photograph, registration or famous relative cannot answer every important question.

YOUR RESEARCH CHECKLIST

Keep the next conversation focused.

0 of 4 checked · session only; nothing is submitted.

General educational information. Not veterinary advice; no veterinary review is claimed. Discuss individual health and breeding decisions with your veterinarian.

Describe the life you are offering

Write down your normal week, your experience, your other animals and the activities you realistically plan to pursue. Share that picture with the breeder. A useful conversation is about suitability, not only which puppy has a particular color or price.

Include the difficult parts: travel, work commitments, household boundaries and the support you have available. You are choosing a long-term relationship, so an honest description is more useful than trying to sound like the perfect buyer.

Ask about the parents and the records

Cornell’s puppy-selection guidance distinguishes registry status from health quality and recommends asking breeders about breed-associated conditions and testing. Ask to see the relevant parent records and have a veterinarian help interpret medical questions.

Match the parents’ identities to the documents. A result for an unrelated kennel dog is not evidence for this litter. If you are given a title or pedigree claim, follow it to the named dog and issuing source.

Talk about how puppies are raised and placed

Ask what the breeder observes as the puppies develop, how prospective homes are matched and what support continues after collection. Request a clear explanation of the records and written terms you will receive. Resolve uncertainty before a deposit or travel commitment.

Do not treat one answer as a universal stamp of quality. Look for a consistent, documented picture and a willingness to discuss limitations as well as strengths. If important claims cannot be explained or checked, pause and investigate further.

Use the index to prepare, not to outsource judgment

Profiles can help you follow named parents and understand the meaning of an event result. They do not certify a litter, replace a breeder visit or establish that a puppy will meet a particular ambition.

The interactive checklist keeps your research organized. Its boxes are for your own session and do not send information to GSD Index. Completing it is not an approval or guarantee; unanswered questions belong in the next conversation.
